Doing research for the novel I'm writing, I realized I had something wrong, from a cultural sense, about China. I named a fictional city, a combination of Beijing and Hong Kong, New Beijing. In my recent readings, I discovered that this could be culturally insensitive to Chinese. During the Opium Wars Westerners often named locations in China "New______." I do not want to be insensitive, or to just get something wrong. My novel is about the adventures and miss adventures of a group of students, and their teachers. The primary character, and several others, are Chinese. It is a fictional story, in a fictional setting, but the history, science and such are real. An example of where I need some assistance to help ensure my writings are accurate, from a Chinese perspective. The main character, a 15 year old Chinese/Filipina, discovers one of Admiral Zheng He's ships intact, on an island in the South China Sea. The ship had struck a reef, been disassembled, and reassembled in a cavern on the island, by Admiral Zheng He. The ship's cargo, and all it's treasures, are intact in the cargo holds. The discovery of one of Admiral Zheng He's ships is of course one of the archeological discoverys of all time. The ship needs a name. I am looking for someone who can help me ensure my novel is accurate, from the Chinese perspective. Due to the nature of my regular job, making friends would be welcomed too. I travel all the time and lead a secluded life, so more friends would be nice. My work takes me to Las Vegas, NV three to five times a week. I am probably one of the few people who travels to Las Vegas weekly, yet interacts with few people. For someone who writes in the modern world, I have very limited technical skills.
