It Takes a Village to Raise a Child

There was a young African girl living with her father. When she turned fifteen, her father told her she needed to marry. She asked her father if she could finish high school before she married. Her father agreed and allowed her to continue her studies. In her last year of school, her father became very ill and was unable to take care of her. She then became the responsibility of all the fathers in village.

The young girl wanted to continue her education and attend a university. There is an old African belief that if someone comes to your home before sunrise and ask something of you, you must agree because it will be something good. The young girl knew she needed the permission of all the fathers in the village to attend a university. One morning, she arose early before sunrise and began making her way from hut to hut, and father to father, asking for permission to attend the university. All the fathers had no choice but to agree. Together, they raised the money needed to pay for the tuition and sent the young girl off to complete her university studies.

The young girl is now a grown woman and a teacher in the village. "It takes a village to raise a child."

I've been to several different countries. I think it is good that our children learn to respect the cultural beliefs of others. That culturally, we are all connected.
